It’s a Tuesday morning at Mumbai’s elite Bombay Gymkhana and an eclectic group of members has gathered to participate in Swetha Jairam’s Zumba class. Following her lead, they move to the rhythm of the music, arms and legs working in synchronicity. What is it about Zumba that attracts people? “It is a Latin-inspired, easy-to-follow, calorie-burning dance-fitness party that works for weight loss, weight management, fat loss and body toning,” sums up Jairam. “It takes the basic steps from Latin dance styles and merges a fitness formula to it. Zumba Fitness allows you to feel like you’re in a nightclub, not an exercise class.” Started in 1986, it is gaining popularity in Mumbai and, according to Althea Shah, Vice President – Marketing at Gold’s Gym India, Zumba is set to be a trend for 2013. Jairam, who also conducts classes at Gold’s Gym, Mumbai, gives us the good news — one can burn up to 1,000 calories in an hour’s class! “The concept here is intermittent training. There’s a fast-paced song that makes your heart rate race, which increases your stamina; then we have a slow-paced number that makes you break into a sweat, toning your muscles and burning more fat.” This total body workout ensures you use a whole range of muscles. The result — a toned, shapely, flexible you. There are other benefits too: “Not only does Zumba Fitness work on your body, it also works on your mind.
