The rising incidence of obesity in today’s environment is associated with many obesity-related health complications (Pi-Sunyer FX., 2002), including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This constellation is also recognized as the metabolic syndrome and is characterized by underlying insulin resistance. A cornerstone of the management strategy in such patients is the use of diet to decrease body weight, and improve glycemic control, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular risks, as well as to treat fatty liver. There is a bewildering array of diets that have been recommended for the prevention and treatment of all of the components of the metabolic syndrome.

The terms “Fad” and “healthy”, like positive and negative electrical charge, are probably defined by their being opposites. Food fad is a term originally used to describe simple, catchy diets that often focused on a single food element.

In 1974, the term was defined as 3 categories of food fads. (McBean,L et al., 1974)

Food fad is also used by media and the scientific community to refer to diets that do not follow common nutritional guidelines.
